Ohio Approves LANGUAGE! Live for Reading Intervention in Grades 5–12
The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce has a longstanding commitment to supporting language and literacy development as part of the state’s overarching strategic plan for education. State leaders do not treat language and literacy as separate entities but as a critical part of education in general. So, every educator and all educational activities across the state include and actively promote language and literacy development.
Ohio’s Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement is a guiding document for a comprehensive literacy program that is regularly reviewed and updated. Along with literacy curriculum and professional development, department leaders have evaluated and approved literacy interventions, including those for adolescent readers who struggle with foundational skills. All language and literacy programs must be aligned with the science of reading and proven strategies for effective literacy instruction and intervention.
Reading Intervention in Ohio
Sixty-nine percent of U.S. eighth grade students are at or below basic reading levels. Ohio’s literacy plan is designed to change that statistic and improve student literacy outcomes.
State educators use a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) for reading instruction so all students receive the instruction and intervention that is just right for them. The MTSS framework is a proactive and preventative approach that allows educators to make data-based instructional decisions related to high-quality instruction, social and emotional learning, and any positive behavioral support students might need.
As a result, all students receive grade-level, differentiated instruction to meet the needs of:
- All learners—Tier 1
- Learners targeted for additional instruction or intervention—Tier 2
- Learners experiencing difficulties—Tier 3
The state-approved list of reading intervention programs supports the MTSS approach and meets the needs of all learners for prekindergarten through grade 12.
