The first week of October is celebrated each year as Dyslexia Awareness Week. It is a time for educators to share what we’ve learned about dyslexia as well as dive into how differentiated, systematically designed, and explicitly delivered instruction helps ALL students, including those with dyslexia, achieve literacy success.

Join us as we explore best practices for supporting students with dyslexia—including adolescents. During a series of Lunch and Learn webinars on EdWeb, we will highlight the work of three educators as they share their research and strategies for working with students with dyslexia.

Each webinar begins at 1 p.m. (ET) on their respective days. Here’s what the week looks like:

October 1, 2024

Dr. Rebecca Tolson, director for structured literacy at the University of Akron, will address how to empower adolescent learners with dyslexia. Participants will gain valuable insight into fostering academic success and promoting positive well-being among adolescent learners with dyslexia.

Dr. Tolson will share classroom strategies that work for older readers and writers who are struggling with foundational skills. In addition, she will offer suggestions about how to provide social and emotional support to teenagers, while providing literacy intervention.

A veteran of national and international literacy councils, Dr. Jan Hasbrouck is a literacy expert, researcher, and author. She will draw from both professional and personal experiences to dispel dyslexia myths and speak about the need to create differentiated learning paths based on science to meet all students’ literacy needs.

Dr. Hasbrouck’s webinar will focus on how to connect the science of reading to your teaching; the current research about identifying and designing appropriate instruction for students with dyslexia; and ideas for successfully differentiating literacy instruction.

Dr. Matthew Burns is the Fien Professor of Special Education at the University of Florida College of Education. He understands the frustration of choosing the right intensive reading intervention to meet a student’s needs. He is well respected for his work with striving readers.

Dr. Burns will go beyond just identifying students with dyslexia to using data to choose select interventions with a higher likelihood of success, and how to modify current interventions to enhance student outcomes. He will present a practical framework to use in working with reading interventions for students with dyslexia.
