OVERVIEW

LANGUAGE! Live is a comprehensive literacy intervention that blends the engaging, digital instruction students enjoy with the highly effective, teacher-led instruction that struggling students need.

Each instructional component—digital and teacher-led—is specifically designed to solve the two most common problems students and teachers face in achieving literacy growth. All instruction is designed to be engaging, respectful, and effective for students in grades 6–10, starting with the very first video students encounter:

DIGITAL INSTRUCTION

District Problem: All intensive reading students struggle with reading, but their levels of proficiency are varied. This issue makes it impossible for teachers to fill in foundational skill gaps that prohibit students from reaching grade-level proficiency. How can one teacher customize instruction to meet the individual needs of each student?

Solution: LANGUAGE! Live has put all of the prerequisite, foundational skills into our digital instruction—Word Training. Based on the initial assessment, students are placed exactly where they need to be. They can work their way through the foundational skills—phonemic awareness, phonics, basic fluency and vocabulary—in a completely private, age-respectful, and engaging online environment. Let’s take a look:

Students with severe gaps might begin with instruction focused on learning sounds.

Students with fewer gaps will focus on more sophisticated word analysis skills.

Humorous skits from the LANGUAGE! Live Teen Team reinforce instructional videos.

Students practice learned skills through Check Your Understanding activities.

TEACHER-LED INSTRUCTION

District Problem: Regardless of a student’s level at the beginning of the school year, each student will take the grade-level FSA at the end of the school year. How can a teacher expose these students to the grade-level expectations and standards they will be tested on in April?

Solution: The small-group, teacher-led component of LANGUAGE! Live—Text Training—provides students with the intensive instruction needed to challenge and accelerate them toward grade-level proficiency. Let’s take a look:

Unit Openers build background knowledge and engage students in the unit theme.

Teachers differentiate instruction outside the print materials in several ways.

Students are taught how to respond to rigorous comprehension questions.

Students practice reading and writing in the FSA-simulator—PowerPass.

ReadingScape provides 24/7 access to an online library of literary and informational texts.

Students can play games that provide intensive practice with sight words.

ELLs and students with language delays have access to a full sound library.
